In Remembrance: on the third anniversary of my teacher Mr Anthony Ho’s passing
Yu Fong-ying (’61)     November 1, 2021

With enduring memories of you these last three years, once again I turn to you,
With your gentle countenance ever present before me.
I remember the beneficial lessons learned by your side,
And with clarity, the slow walk accompanying you on a sunny autumn day.(1)
Heavenly objects, earthly affairs, feelings for homeland wax and wane;
Clouds disperse and fogs disappear; died early so some friends.(2)
What great pity! Some lost their freedom defending social justice.
How strange! Others faced an about-turn, like being broiled on a gridiron.
Horrible and ferocious, the pandemic hovers over the world like ghosts.
The four sufferings mock and entangle life.(3)
I wish I could continue to follow you in your effortful but determined steps
And learn to live out my old age with self-reliance, perseverance and equanimity.

Notes
(1) On September 16, 2018, Chu Shing Ning and I accompanied Mr Ho on a walker back and forth the length of one street block in the Terry Fox Run in Toronto. He was weakened by his terminal illness but still participated in the charity run just like in the years before.
(2) Five university and school friends and one student have passed away this year: Yau Shun-chiu, Chan Choi Lai; Lee Wen Ho, Auyang Siu Lee, Michael Tang; Lee Wai Hung.
(3) The four sufferings, a Buddhist term: birth, age, disease and death.
