New Horizon Lions Club held its 2026 charity table tennis tournament on Sunday August 9 at Markham Wesley Centre with many different categories of competition. Two teams representing WYKAAO participated as in the past many years. Team B won the third place out of 12 teams in the Community Team category. Our Team A, the defending champion, again won the first place out of 8 teams in the Inter-School Team category this year! (more pictures)
The following is a brief highlight from our team captain Mike Yam (’74) on the tournament final match with St. Joseph's Anglo-Chinese School.
"Each year we have a different hero. Last year we had Michael Chan who beat Bing Lee in the 5th and final match. This year Steve Fung rise to the occasion. After we won the first Double match, Steve, a 654 rating player was playing against David Lau, a 2400 ranked player in the 2nd match. The advice from the captain was “Don’t be too aggressive. Just don’t give him the chance”. He executed this strategy beautifully.
In the whole match, he put the ball low on to David’s backhand side, forcing him to commit a lot of errors. And even in the rare rallies where David made the attack, Steve made a couple of great blocks to return the shot. This wears him down and Steve go on to win 2:1.
This gave the team a huge boost and Captain Mike follows Steve’s step to beat the exhausted David in the 4th match. This, I believe, is the first time David Lau lost 2 Singles matches in one tournament. Wah Yan boys went on to win 3:1 by getting 2 points from the unexpected."
