Tipsy Beneath the Blossoms

Misty or cloudy, an unspoken sadness lingers.
I light the incense in the golden burner,
and let it smolder,
Till no more fragrance fills my chamber.
‘Tis the old fete of deep autumn,
A time of remembrance and feast.
At midnight I lie awake,
My jade-like pillow and chiffon canopy are chilly upon my fingers,
Having bathed in the whiffs of the cool evening breeze.

Long after sunset I still sit languidly by the eastern fence, a wine cup at hand.
Stealthy wisps of flower scent line the folds of my sleeve as I sip.
What anguish!
Now and then, the westerly wind tosses the drapes in a whirl.
Behold. The yellow chrysanthemum thrives and I but wane.

Frog Autumn by Sylvia Plath (1932 –1963)

Summer grows old, cold-blooded mother.
The insects are scant, skinny.
In these palustral homes we only
Croak and wither.

Mornings dissipate in somnolence.
The sun brightens tardily
Among the pithless reeds. Flies fail us.
The fen sickens.

Frost drops even the spider. Clearly
The genius of plenitude
Houses himself elsewhere. Our folk thin
Lamentably.
