Thanks to our 58 generous supporters, Team WYKAAO raised a good sum for the Terry Fox Run Foundation to fight cancer. We beat last year's goal by a short nose (5010/4900). It was a beautiful day for the run/walk. Our youngest member made a 10 Km Run, while others walked comfortably in the sun. After the event, they all visited the quaint village farmers' market.

Alex Cheng (’09) recently returned from a volunteer mission in Honduras and sent WYKAAO a thank-you letter,
“I have come back from Honduras!! It was the most AMAZING and MEANINGFUL trip ever!! We built a house for a single mother and her children. I met a lot of nice people from Canada, Honduras and even a student group from Oxford. I would say I am proud of my team because we worked our butts off even though it was like 40 degree, because we just wanted to get as much done as possible (see a video here). Unfortunately four team members got sick, but they recovered pretty soon. I am touched by the helpfulness of the Honduran neighbours because they had been really kind and provide everything we need such as washroom and storage space.
As part of our Mon Sheong’s community services, a membership club for the seniors called the Mon Sheong Circle of Friends –Seniors (孟嘗之友-長者會所), or Senior Circle (長者會所) in short, was introduced on August 10, 2011. The intention of the new membership club is to help our seniors in our local community as much as possible and to provide a Centre where they can find friendship and care. It is a Centre where they can occupy themselves by participating in activities organised specially for them such as morning Tai Chi exercise, health dance, Karaoke, ping-pong and even mah-jong.
An Invitation to Mon Sheong Volunteer Recruitment Open Day at the Volunteer Centre
From Gerald Ngan (Director, Volunteer Services and Youth Group Development, Mon Sheong Foundation),
"Volunteers are one of the biggest assets of the Mon Sheong Foundation and they have been instrumental in allowing us to provide quality care to those needy individuals in our community.
It has been our goal to reach out to everyone around us to introduce them to the various services Mon Sheong is providing, and inform them of the different volunteer opportunities available. With this in mind, we are pleased to invite you to come to our Volunteer Recruitment Open Day to kick start our celebration of the National Volunteer Week:
Date: April 9 (Saturday) and 10 (Sunday)
Time: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
Venue: Mon Sheong Volunteer Centre, 2020 McNicoll Avenue, Scarborough (at Kennedy Road)
Philip Lee (WYK 60), Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, was awarded Chinese Canadian Legend at a celebration event hosted by the Asian Business Network Association in a Richmond Hill hotel grand ballroom. Dignitaries, government officials and other VIPs were invited to the occasion (see this video clip). Members from both Wah Yan alumni associations in Ontario also attended the ceremony to share the joy and are proud of what Philip has achieved (see the award presentation here).

WYKAAO once again participated in the annual Terry Fox Run; this year marked the 30th anniversary of the event. The weather was one of the best in recent years for the walk/run. After a brief introduction by the event organizer and speeches from the dignitaries, we were off for a refreshing morning walking exercise. Starting from the Old Unionville Library, we strolled along a route that is mixed with park areas, boardwalks and natural habitats (click here to view the pictures). Thanks to our 61 generous supporters, the WYKAAO team has raised over $5,000 this year for the great cause! (Click here to see an acknowledgement letter from the Terry Fox Foundation.)
Philip Lee, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, attended the 10th Canadian Chinese Legend on October 31, 2009 in Toronto. Here is the video produced by King L Chan.
September 13th - It was a perfect day for Terry Fox Run, Marathon of Hope to find a cure for cancer. WYKAAO once again participated in the event at the Markham/Unionville site. Click here to see the pictures. John Ho ('65), who took part in the First Run in the 80s, is part of our team; he and his wife, Rose, are visting from Hong Kong. Jeff's brother and his family are visiting from Vancouver; they joined our great WYKAAO team as well. We collectively raised over $4,600 so far this year. 2009 pledge of this good cause will continue until the end of the year. A big THANK YOU for your generous support!
