WYKAAO Functions
(July 10 at Mon Sheong Court) Our President, David Wong gave a high-level yet interesting talk on 陰陽五行, 天干地支, 面相, 風水等等. The idea is to introduce to the audience the basic concepts and inter-relationships of the topics mentioned above. Basic it may seem, it certainly takes time and brain power to understand the underlying theories. This is meant to be an introductory discussion; more in-depth seminars may be held in the future depending on interests of the members.
David wrapped up the talk after a brief refreshment break; all attendees held on tight to the handouts with their scribbled notes because they know they will have more than food to digest afterwards (see the pictures here). If you are interested in obtaining a soft copy of the notes handed out in the talk, please click here and let us know.
2010 Spring Banquet was successfully held on March 6th. Over 50 alumni, family and guests attended the event. John Kan ('67) gave an informative yet interesting talk on wine and its pairings with Chinese food. Delicious dinner was served after the talk and everyone tried to get a first-hand experience of wine tasting and food pairings after hearing the tips from John (thanks to his hand-picked red and white). All attendees were going home with a tall stemmed wine glass as a souvenir, a few lucky ones with a decanter and a bottle of wine as well.

The first event of 2010 was a net-working dinner in Richmond Hill on Friday, January 08. Sung Yan-Wing (65) gave an overview of how US became a leading economic order and China’s rise to become the next powerful economic order. The importance of the interplay between these two powers surfaced at the recent Copenhagen Climate Change Conference 2009. It was a most informative and interesting talk. Sung Yan-Wing left shortly after 9:15 pm to catch his plane to Hong Kong at mid-night. Click here to view the pictures.

Hong Kong and Kowloon Wah Yan alumni associations in Ontario jointly hosted a welcome dinner for Fr. Stephen Chow on July 24th in a Chinese restaurant in Markham. Over 50 people from both chapters attended the event. Fr. Chow, Supervisor of both Wah Yan's, brought the group a lot of updates related to our school. He also discussed some of the issues both schools are facing under the current social situations and education system in Hong Kong. The document of the "Profile of the Jesuit Student at Graduation for the Chinese Province", which Fr. Chow presented during the dinner, can be downloaded here.

Under perfect weather condition, our 2009 winery tour to the Niagara Culinary Institute was a great success. All of us learned a great deal about wine making, wine purchasing and the art of wine drinking. This was followed by a delicious lunch in their dining room. Three picture albums (#1, #2, #3) are now available for viewing; a video can be seen here.
A joint dinner with Wah Yan Hong Kong Ontario chapter in honour of the visiting Fr. Sean Coghlan, S.J. was held on 7 June at the Brilliant Restaurant. The pictures can be seen here.
Message from Father Coghlan, "I repeat that, like many other Jesuits, I am staggered by the kindness and loyalty of all our Wah Yan friends.
In particular I want to thank Gus Yeung for driving me three times to various destinations and also Laurence Tam for the magnificent book he presented to me.
I hope that any Ontario WahYanite who comes to Hong Kong will contact me at 25469201
With renewed thanks,
Best wishes and prayers for your health and happiness."
Ink Painting and Art Education by Eric Li
The Ink Painting and Art Education, co-organized by the Wah Yan College Kowloon Alumni Association of Ontario and the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library, was held on June 5, 2009 at the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library, University of Toronto. Four distinguished speakers, Mr. Laurence Tam (Former Chief Curator of Hong Kong Museum of Art and art teacher at Wah Yan College, Kowloon), Prof. Ted Rettig (Associate Professor, Department of Art, Queen's University), Sharon Cook (Artist), and Henry Ho (Director of IS Gallery), shared their experiences and insights of art education and ink painting movement in Chinese and Canadian communities. About 70 participants, including WYKAAO alumni and friends, scholars, artists and students attended the seminar that morning. Everyone enjoyed the presentations and appreciated the artworks created by WYK alumni four decades ago. Mr. Tam emphasized that his teaching philosophy is to educate students learn how to bear the consequences of their actions and to develop appropriate attitude towards learning. He is glad that many of his students become successful individuals in the society. (pictures, video)
